program note

gwanak-yeongsan-hoesang (관악영산회상), a traditional music of korea, is a wind ensemble piece in the form of a suite. it consists of eight movements, and gradually gets faster over about forty-five minutes. the piece is performed with a minimum of six performers (which is called samhyeon yukgak). unlike western music, it doesn’t require the performers to have precise synchronization. it follows the concept of ‘yeoneum’, which means that when one instrument plays a melody, other instruments naturally receive it and connect the music.

the piece ‘pirịɹᴉd’ focuses on this yeoneum concept. instead of other instruments taking over when the piri, the instrument playing the main melody, rests, it employs fixed media. among the eight movements from the original piece, four were extracted: sangyeongsan, seyeongsan, yeombuldoduri, and taryeong. the purpose of the piece is to introduce the gwanak-yeongsan-hoesang to the audience in a more accessible manner. while preserving the essence of the original, it undergoes various electronic transformations.
