program note

I usually start composing by clearly establishing a subject matter. To briefly explain the reason, it is related to the function or role of an artist. At this point, which is constantly experiencing rapid changes, it is fitting that the questions and messages of artists (as members of society) should be abundant. However, different approaches are of course necessary, and their meanings are equally profound. It is about finding beauty within the essence of music itself. The piece ‘rheo’ is such a case.

If we trace back the etymology of ‘Rhythm’, you reach ‘ῥέω (rhéō)’, which means ‘to flow’, ‘to run’, and ‘to gush out’. The piece, true to the title, focuses on rhythm, which is connected to the purpose of the composition process. First, I write only the rhythm, like a percussion piece. Then, after making adjustments with flexibility, I overlay the appropriate pitch. Establishing and developing the flow of the piece based solely on rhythm can also be seen as part of studying composition techniques.
