program note

‘strepho’ means ‘to change’, or ‘to twist.’ This piece aims to explore the artistic technique of ‘defamiliarization’, which involves twisting familiar elements in various ways to elicit new appreciation.

The piece uses classical elements as its material. It starts with a passage using traditional harmony and melodic progression, which then develops into a tension between familiarity and unfamiliarity through disassembly and recombination. While the piece generally pursues a smooth progression, it also focuses on unpredictability in the process of development.
